I found out years ago that horses helped me. Due to this and my need to share, I have been putting people and horses together since I was 8 years old.
I invited classmates who voiced interest in horses to come to the barn and help. At 9 years old I was taking care of 7 horses along with my new devoted friends. The horses were owned by young working men who were glad their horses were being ridden and taking care of during the work week. On Friday nights the barn was off limits to all of us kids as the men rented steers and had their own rodeo that included activities involving ropes and guns.
In those days, we rode our bikes anxiously to get to the barn every day at 3:30. The barn was a warm, friendly place to be in and attracted many kids. As we grew together some went on to get their own horses. Some joined 4-H, some just enjoyed the farm atmosphere at this barn or another barn. The world opened up to all of us and it was full of possibilities and adventures. We were empowered and we all knew the horses were the start of it.
I continue to enjoy bringing people and horses together. My why has not changed. I love the connection, adventure, companionship and inspiration that comes from horses and people together.
