Overview/Summary of Position:
- Ensures the safety and well-being of the equines and humans participating in equine-facilitated mental health sessions
- Candidate must be knowledgeable in horsemanship and understands how to collaborate with a mental health therapist to best meet the client’s needs and keep the session safe
- Candidate must have a thorough understanding of the ways equine behavior affect human responses and evaluate the role of the equine during the mental health or sessions they supervise. This includes a thorough understanding of horse psychology and reading horse body language/nonverbal communication
- Candidate maintains responsibility for the equine, assesses the equine’s response to any interactions, and prohibits or stops any activity that compromises the well-being of the equines or the humans
- Willing to train/supervise other equine specialists
- This is a collaborative learning environment. Willingness to learn and work as a team is important.
Qualifications:
- Certification as Equine Specialist through Eagala OR Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning through Path, Int.
- Prior knowledge of natural horsemanship techniques is preferred but not required
- Ability to perform basic horse skills (grooming, ground work)
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Basic computer skills
Physical requirements:
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 75 pounds
- Able to stand or walk for long periods of time
Other requirements:
- Maintain complete confidentiality in all patient/program matters, in accordance with facility policy.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures relevant to the job, the department, and external regulating bodies or obtain approval for exception
