Equine Assisted Therapy and Veterans
Who are some of the military men and women we work with?
Our ideal client is a veteran who is separating from the military. He or she is looking for their next step in life. This is daunting and scary. Or, there is some trauma and moral injury causing PTSD. This vet asked for support in finding ways to forgive him or herself, understand the recurring emotions, how to keep them quiet, and ways to move past this obstacle standing in the way of acclimating to civilian life and finding peace personally, at home, in relationships, and in a new career. We will unpack the weight of this life change, and help find a new, positive focus to answer some of life's most difficult challenges.
Another ideal client is a veteran who has separated many years ago but still cannot find the peace within him or herself to move through life with grace and ease. They can be ok for periods of time and then slip into a dark space with little resources to get themselves out. They have a feeling that traditional therapy can help but they need more. We can help fill that gap and offer additional tools to add to their tool belt.
In addition, we serve active duty military personnel and their families. We offer family sessions to enrich the connection that can often be interrupted by deployments. These sessions focus on reconnections and fun. The sense of being together is supported and enriched with the help of our horses.
We offer services to the military, their families, and people of all walks of life. Anything from career choices to divorce, adjusting to a new born to losing a loved one and everything in between, we are here to help you realize your goals and purpose while making sense of the obstacles life has thrown your way.
We have 2 locations for your convenience. One at our private Salem County Farm located in Mannington, NJ and the other at the amazing Dream Park located in Gloucester County, Logan, NJ. Both locations offer safety and privacy for one to do the personal work needed in the company of horses.
We use the EAGALA Model of solution oriented, experiential therapy to help assist you in attaining your goals through finding your strengths and overcoming the obstacles that maybe in your way. No horse experience is needed to enjoy this experience. All one needs is to be curious and closed toed shoes. There is no riding in this program. We offer a safe place to explore yourself and others through the interaction with the horses.
HOW IT WORKSThe Eagala Model is a team approach that includes a licensed, credentialed Mental Health Professional, a qualified Equine Specialist, and horses working together with the client in an arena at all times.
When inside the arena, all the work is done on the ground with the horses front and center, deliberately unhindered and never ridden, and allowed to interact with the client as they wish. This creates the space for the client, with the support of the professional facilitators, to reflect, project, and make deep connections.
We follow the Eagala Standards that include a team approach, ground based sessions, solution oriented process and follow a code of ethics.

EAT of NJ has partnered with V.E.T.S Veteran Equine Therapy Specialists to find funding and reach out to as many veterans as we possibly can who are searching for this service. We strive to work toward supplying the therapy at no charge to the veteran. Our goal is to increase mental health services and decrease military suicide rates. Therefore we are always looking for funding, grants and donations in order to carry out our work. EAT of NJ is a non-profit 501 c(3) corporation and contributions can be tax deductible as the tax laws permit.
