Information about the Path Workshop and Certification Process
The first thing to know is it is broken into 2 phases.
Many people complete Phase 1 before coming to the workshop/certification courses. However, the workshop is open to anyone interested in attending, whether they are looking to become a PATH Intl. Certified Registered Level Instructor or just seeking more knowledge about therapeutic riding. Workshops may also be audited however they are not counted toward educational hours for certification. One can choose to purchase a manual or not.
Phase 1 tasks: all found on www.pathintl.org
* Submit Path Intl. Individual Membership Application with Membership dues
* Submit Instructor Application with fee (valid for one year)
* Purchase Standards Manual and Instructor Education Guide (purchase is optional)
* Complete:
1. Pre-Certification Self-Assessment
2. Certification and Accreditation Training (CAT)Course and Exam
3. Instructor Self-Study Course and Exam
* Complete Equine Management Skills Checklist
* Provide Proof of valid Adult/Child CPR and First Aid Certificates
(100% online CPR and First Aid courses will not be accepted. Blended courses are acceptable)
***Receive Instructor-in-Training (IT) Letter & Proceed to Phase II
Phase II
* Complete a minimum of 25 hours of teaching therapeutic riding instruction to groups of at least two riders under a PATH intl. Therapeutic Riding Instructor
(Teaching hours can be started at any time during the instructor application process and are valid for two years)
* Attend a PATH Intl. On-Site Workshop and Certification event (OSWC)
Certification candidates are evaluated by PATH Intl. Evaluators on two components:
1. Riding/horsemanship skills demonstration
2. Teaching riders with disabilities
(Workshop can be completed at any time during the instructor application process and does not need to be completed at the same time or location as the certification.)
* RENEW INSTRUCTOR MEMBERSHIP ANNUALLY by submitting:
1. Membership fee
2. 20 hours of continuing education
Cost for Workshop is $400.00
Cost for Certification is $400.00
Cost for both is $700.00
Cost for auditor without manual is $100.00
Cost for auditor with manual is $135.00
To sign up and reserve your spot, a 1/2 deposit is required. Full payment is due 32 days prior to workshop/certification dates.
Instructor In Training letters need to be submitted no later than 32 days before the start of the Workshop/Certification dates.
Any candidate who are not able to produce an IT letter (or any other prerequisite) will need to drop out of the certification process 32 days before the event in order to receive a refund.

Phase One is managed by the PATH Int’l office & requires a maximum six-month time frame to complete.
